The Adornments: Venetian and Trade Beads Exhibition has been extended until 28th December 2024, open Wednesdays to Saturdays 10am-5pm. There are many important pieces including two private collections as well as over 50 beautiful necklaces and earrings for sale. We will be reporting on the talk by Dr Tonia Marek, who has studied in the field, for many years, the role of beads in ritual and healing ceremonies, thanks to the Society of Jewellery Historians for presenting her work. Many thanks, too, to specialist dealer-collector Victor Austin for loaning the remarkable pieces in the exhibition and to best-selling author Tracy Chevalier for coming to the gallery to talk about her new novel “The Glassmaker” and to open the exhibition. The Design Gallery was launched in 2002 to specialise in progressive design movements of the 19th and 20th Century. We met whilst studying at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and discovered that we shared a passion for design, especially Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts Movement.
